Many synagogues in our community provide monthly drop-in centres for asylum seekers, where they can receive a warm meal, new clothes, and legal assistance. Unfortunately, asylum seekers, who are prohibited from working or establishing permanent housing before their claims are finalised, are at much higher risk of modern-day slavery. To prevent re-exploitation , identifying potential victims of modern slavery is extremely important. The Nationality and Borders Bill will only make this more difficult, due to draconian measures which punish those who enter the UK via routes deemed ‘illegal’.
To try and combat some of these abuses, René Cassin has organised training for volunteers who are interacting directly with asylum seekers. In this workshop, the first in a two part series, Dan Pratt from anti-slavery charity Together Free will introduce and train synagogue volunteers at a range of drop-ins to modern slavery as an issue, and how to spot the signs of someone experiencing it.
