Hummus & Human Rights Part 2: Cultural Genocide of the Muslim Uyghurs
Wednesday 20 May 2020 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm BST
Cultural Genocide in Xinjiang – China’s repression of its Uyghurs Muslims; with Rahima Mahmut from the World Uyghur Congress
“For people to live, food and shelter are not enough, people hunger for another sort of sustenance. You cannot enjoy life without feeling the satisfaction of your soul.” (Rahima Mahmut, 2019). In China’s Xinjian region, close to three million Muslim Uyghur are being persecuted because of their Turkic culture, and their heritage, traditions and legacy are being eroded.
From the accounts given by Uyghur survivors of China’s internment camps, their lives inside the camps were that of horror and pain. Taking away one’s language, culture and religion is equivalent to taking away one’s soul. However, Rahima refuses to drown with despair and instead choses to find meaning in life by campaigning for the freedom of her people.
Speaker: Rahima Mahmut, Director of the World Uyghur Congress London office. Rahima is an Uyghur singer, human rights activist, and award-winning translator of the poignant prison memoir The Land Drenched in Tears by Soyungul Chanisheff.
