An intern's testimonial

I spent three months interning with the René Cassin Foundation as part of an internship programme organised by my university in Sydney, Australia. The fact that I was spending my summer working full-time in wintery London was baffling to almost everyone I told, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Working at the René Cassin Foundation has been a truly eye-opening experience. While it may be a relatively small organisation, it is very ambitious and manages to accomplish amazing things.alt

While there I worked on the slavery & human trafficking campaign, and the Gypsy & Traveller campaign. Both campaigns and the work I did for them challenged me in quite distinct ways. Working to end discrimination against Gypsies & Travellers in the UK is a foreign issue for me, so I was taken on a steep learning curve and exposed to human rights violations that I had never before encountered. The campaign to end modern day slavery & human trafficking tested my legal background and compelled me to work harder, more effectively and more thoroughly than ever before.

I couldn’t possibly write a testimonial without mentioning the brilliant ladies who run the René Cassin Foundation. Simone Abel, the Director, is without a doubt the loveliest person I have ever met. She is clever, innovative, open-minded, friendly and completely dedicated to this organisation. Shauna Leven, the Programme Manager, has a great mind but an even greater heart. She is incredibly intelligent, patient, kind, funny, and passionate about human rights.

I’ve spent one of the best summers of my life interning in London with the René Cassin Foundation. The work was at times tedious and generally progress in a human rights organisation is frustratingly slow but it’s so incredibly rewarding you can’t help but come back for more.
